She loved being in the mountains – hiking in the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico, the mountains overlooking Bergen, Norway, and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Canada. Her other outdoor interests included golf, tennis, snow skiing, gardening, and even braving a whitewater rafting trip down the Maligne River in Northern Canada. Indoor activities included retail sales with Wilson Company of Houston, volunteer work with the Savannah Chamber of Commerce (Georgia) and clerical duties with the Tax Assessor/Collector for the Gladewater County Line School District in Texas. Joan enjoyed painting with watercolors, stitchery and crocheting, and getting together with friends for Mahjong and other games. She also served as Secretary for the Hideaway Computer Club. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-inlaw, Melinda and Schaun Smith of Hideaway and Rosanne and Chris Beckcom of Cedar Park; 4 grandchildren, Zachary Smith and wife, Jennifer, Kelly Smith, Ian Beckcom and wife, Hutton, Caitlin Sykora and husband Collin; and Joan's aunt, Helen Parks. The family expresses their gratitude for the wonderful love and care Joan received from her medical team and The Hospice of East Texas.
