VAN — Colton Smallwood threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns as the Van Vandals defeated the Palestine Wildcats, 43-7, Friday at Van Memorial Stadium.
Smallwood hit on 16 of 32 pass attempts. He tossed TD passes to Jared Carter and Colby Rucker.
Rucker had eight catches for 97 yards, while Carter hauled in four receptions for 69 yards.
Playing without starting quarterback Caleb Cargill, who is away from the team for “personal reasons” according to PHS coach Lance Angel, the Palestine offense never gained rhythm, turned the ball over three times and never stood much chance against the Vandals.
Van scored 27 points in the first quarter, including an interception return for a touchdown, to put the game away before it ever really got started.
Rigo Lemus led Van with 10 tackles and a 15-yard interception return for a TD. Dalton Santos had nine tackles for the Vandals.
