Whitehouse edges Pine Tree, 45-43, on 29-yard field goal

WHITEHOUSE — Cooper Clemons kicked a 29-yard field goal to rally the Whitehouse Wildcats to a 45-43 win over the Longview Pine Tree Pirates on Friday night in a District 9-5A Division II football game at Wildcat Stadium.
Pine Tree would get one last gasp as DJ Freeman and JJ Sparkman connected on a 21-yard pass play to the Whitehouse 40. The clock drained down to triple zeros. Officials put 2.0 seconds back and Jose Vazquez lined up for a 57-yard attempt. His effort went about 45 yards as the game ended.

The Pirates had rallied from an early deficit to take the lead when Keshon Williams burst across from 6 yards out at 4:28 of the third. It came on the heels of Nick Williams’ interception of a Flint Herrington pass. The short field worked to the Pirates’ benefit as Williams, who finished with 104 yards on seven carries, lumbered in with little trouble.
Pine Tree was quick-strike for its points most of the night. The possession prior to Williams’ pick, Freeman and Sparkman teamed up on a one-snap 64-yard TD at 4:47. Keshon Williams added the 2-point conversion to square the game at 29-all.
Whitehouse answered the Williams TD and the game was tied once again at 36-all with 6:23 to play in regulation. Freeman found Keshon over the middle for a 72-yard score. Williams would not be brought down merely by arm tackles and lumbered all the way to the house with 6:03 to play at a 43-36 Pirate lead with still 4:27 left to play.
Herrington, who completed 30 of 40 passes for 333 yards and three TDs, worked the Wildcats back down the field for what looked to be the game-tying TD. On the point-after, however, things went awry and Gabe Adams slung Clemons to the turf. Pine Tree still clung to a 43-42 lead.
Gabe Nelson led Pine Tree with 148 yards on the ground, while Sparkman pulled in five passes for 135 yards. Freeman finished the night 10 of 18 for 137 yards and three TDs.
Whitehouse stormed out to a commanding 29-7 lead when Cameron Cantrell bounced outside and raced 30 yards down the sideline for a score with 4:54 left in the first half. The Wildcats forced a Pirate turnover on downs after which Chaez Spurlock deflected a fourth down pass by Corey Thomas Jr. Pine Tree had driven 42 yards in 13 plays before turning it over on downs.
