Boys Soccer Notebook: Palestine’s Tony Sanchez takes weekly honor

Palestine’s Tony Sanchez has earned Tyler Morning Telegraph Boys Soccer Player of the Week honors for games played Feb. 19-24.

The sophomore had five goals and two assists as the Wildcats went 1-1 against Jacksonville and Diboll.

In other outstanding performances in the area last week (nominated by coaches):

Palestine Westwood’s Alex Alvizures had three goals and three assists as Westwood defeated Hudson and played to a 4-4 draw with Crockett. Alvizures has 12 goals and eight assists on the season.

Palestine’s Dylan Jones had three goals and two assists. Cash Hernandez had a goal, and he had three assists on throw-ins.



Cumberand Academy’s Daniel Oneda had a goal and three shots on target against in a 2-1 overtime win over Mineola. Diego Pilar scored on a penalty kick and had 12 steals in a 2-1 overtime win over Brownsboro. Macklane Parksley scored the winning goal against Mineola in overtime. He had three shots on goal and six corner kicks.

Bishop Gorman’s JJ Rodriguez scored four goals.

Multiple East Texas teams earned a spot in the MaxPreps state rankings.

In Class 6A, Tyler legacy (8-3-5) is No. 25. In Class 5A, Longview (14-4) is No. 20 and Nacogdoches (9-6-2) No. 22. In Class 4A, Kilgore (14-0-2) is No. 2, Jacksonville (14-3-1) No. 2, Kilgore (15-1-2) No. 4, Palestine (16-3) No. 9 Sabine (15-2-1) No. 16 and Pleasant Grove (9-2) No. 23.

In the Lethal Soccer Rankings, Longview No. 17 in 5A; and Jacksonville No. 6, Kilgore No. 11 and Sabine No. 33 in Class 4A.
