Dylan Cantrell, the former Whitehouse High School star, had a career-best 10 catches for Texas Tech in the Red Raiders game with Kansas State on Saturday.

Unfortunately, Cantrell was spotted wearing a cast on his left hand up to mid-forearm on Wednesday during practice.

Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury has not announced the status of the 6-3, 210-pound junior for Saturday’s key contest with West Virginia in Lubbock.

Cantrell has been a top target from buddy and Red Raider quarterback Pat Mahomes II. Cantrell, son of Kenny and Shelly Cantrell of Whitehouse, has 26 receptions for 319 yards and four touchdowns for the Red Raiders. Against the Wildcats in a 44-38 defeat in Manhattan, Kansas, Cantrell had 81 yards in receiving.

The exercise and sports science major was also voted as the best blocking wide receiver in college football by PPF College Football web site.

The Red Raiders (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) and No. 20 Mountaineers (4-0, 1-0) tangle at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock. The contest will be broadcast on TV by Fox Sports 1 and on radio by ESPN East Texas 92.1-FM.

Also, Mahomes continues to play outstanding for the Red Raiders. The former Whitehouse star 8,474 career passing yards and needs 173 to pass Seth Doege for third place on Texas Tech’s career list.

In game where it was unsure if Mahomes would play against Kansas State, he hit on 45 of 61 pass attempts for 504 yards and two TD passes. He had one interception. He rushed for three touchdowns on runs of 1, 16 and 3 yards.

Werner Winner

Allie Werner, a freshman from Tyler, came up big for her MIT Engineers this week.

The All Saints Episcopal graduate, the four-time All-East Texas soccer player, scored the game-winning goal.

With 6:39 left in the match, Werner registered her first collegiate goal – the game winner – to lift the Engineers to a 2-1 win over Wellesley College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference action on Tuesday on Roberts Field at Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The victory helped the Engineers move to No. 10 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America New England Division III Coaches Poll.

The score was tied at 1-1 until freshman Claire O’Callaghan passed the ball to Werner, who gathered it and cut toward the net. Werner fired the ball from the top of the box and into the left side of the net.

Werner, a biological engineering major, and her Massachusetts Institute of Technology squad plays host to Smith College on Saturday at 1 p.m. local time.

The Engineers are 12-4 overall and 4-1 in NEWMAC play.
