Tyler Police Department is investigating a Monday afternoon shooting.

Tyler police say officers responded to a welfare check call at 1:25 p.m. on Monday in the 700 block of Chimney Rock Road, according to Andy Erbaugh, Tyler Police spokesperson.

“A family friend called us wanting to check on the welfare of the two elderly residents, along with the son, who lives here,” Erbaugh said. “We have information that the son may have been involved in drugs or something drug-related.”

The police arrived to find Otto Gyallai, 88, dead in the living room with a gunshot wound and Anthony Gyallai, 45, also dead in the back room from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Although the shooting remains under investigation, Erbaugh said investigators believe this was likely a murder-suicide.

“Everything indicates that Anthony shot his father, Otto, and then shot himself,” Erbaugh said. “The investigators are here, the judge has already been here… autopsies have been ordered. Right now, we’re gathering all the evidence in the house, getting things swapped and making sure everything has been processed.”

Otto’s wife was asleep in the bedroom and did not hear anything. She is physically unharmed, according to Erbaugh.

Family notifications have been made.

The incident is under investigation, and further details will be released as they become available.
