13th Annual Macy Chenevert/Patriot Holiday Basketball Classic

With the presents opened, ham and turkey eaten, and Santa taking a break, it was time for basketball at UT Tyler.

Eight games took place on Thursday in the 13th Annual Macy Chenevert/Patriot Holiday Classic at the Herrington Patriot Center.

The girls tourney features some of the top teams in East Texas. This year the tournament is sponsored by All Saints Episcopal School and UT Tyler and honors the spirit of Macy Chenevert, who despite taking chemotherapy treatments led her Bishop Gorman Middle School team in scoring en route to second place in their district. She passed away April 14, 2005.

Eight more games are set for Friday with the semifinals at 3 p.m. (Gilmer vs. Jacksonville) and 4:30 p.m. (Canton vs. Mineola).

Capturing wins in the first round were Athens (67-14 over Bishop Gorman), Jacksonville (70-15 over Winona), Bullard Brook Hill (33-25 over Whitehouse) and Mineola (69-53 over Atlanta). Gilmer, Tyler Grace Community, Canton and Tyler All Saints received first-round byes.



ATHENS 67, BISHOP GORMAN 14

Mimi McCollister hit for a game-high 35 points to pace Athens to the win. Tanya Hubbard and Bre’nya Barker were next for the Lady Hornets with nine and eight points, respectively.

Claire Fanning led the Lady Crusaders with five points.

Gorman meets Brook Hill at noon Friday.

JACKSONVILLE 70, WINONA 15

Jacksonville used a balanced scoring attack as every Maiden scored. Ka’lessia Anderson led Jacksonville with 15 points with Tyshera Gipson adding 11.

Khalsa Simmons led the Lady Cats with seven points.

Jacksonville is coached by former Jacksonville College coach Lynn Nabi.

Winona takes on either Mineola or All Saints at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

BROOK HILL 33, WHITEHOUSE 25

In the closest game of the day, Brook Hill, led by Katlyn Jasper’s nine points and eight points from Kylei Griffin, downed Whitehouse.

Susanna Moran led the Lady Cats with 11 points.

Whitehouse will play Athens at 9 a.m. Friday.

MINEOLA 69, ATLANTA 53

In the final game of the first round, Mineola, paced by Jessiah Riley’s 24 points, downed the Lady Rabbits of Atlanta.

Tahjae Black added 18 points for the Lady Jackets with Sabria Dean pitching in 15.

Atlanta was paced by Keyona Easter (28) and Sheveonia Smith (20).

Atlanta is scheduled to play Grace Community at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

GILMER 58, ATHENS 44

In the first quarterfinals game, Meshia Shead hit for 18 points and Ayanna Choyce and LeLe Morton combined for 22 points to pace Gilmer.

Morton had 12 points with Choyce right behind with 10.

McCollister led her team for the second time on Thursday with 26 points.

The Lady Buckeyes meet Jacksonville at 3 p.m. Friday in the semifinals with Athens taking on Whitehouse at 9 a.m. Friday.

JACKSONVILLE 62, GRACE COMMUNITY 29

Jacksonville notched its second victory of the day as Alexis Calderon paced the Maidens with 15 points. Also in double figures were Keon’shay Fuller (14) and Grace Abercrombie (11).

Jordan Tauscher led the Lady Cougars with 12.

Grace will face Atlanta at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the consolation, while Jacksonville meets Gilmer at 3 p.m.

CANTON 49, BROOK HILL 10

Olivia Norrell hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter and Chelsey Dollgener connected on a trey at the end of the second quarter as Canton rolled to the win over Brook. Hill.

The victory moved the Eaglettes to 20-1 on the season.

Mattie Tullos led Canton with 14 points while Hannah Manry added 10 points.

Canton will face Mineola at 4:30 p.m. Friday, while Brook Hill meets Gorman at noon.

MINEOLA 58, ALL SAINTS 37

Mineola improves to 17-6 with the victory, while All Saints falls to 7-10.

Kelsey Brewington led Mineola with 18 points, while Jessiah Riley added 16.

Grace Wolfe led the Lady Trojans with 14 points, followed by Madeline Perkins and Lauren Datwyler with 10 and nine points, respectively.

Mineola advances to meet Canton in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Friday. The Lady Trojans will face Winona at 1:30 p.m.

There will be five games on championship Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. and concluding with the title game at 3 p.m.
