Texas College opens conference with victories

The Texas College basketball teams opened Red River Athletic Conference play with two wins on Thursday against the University of the Southwest at Gus F. Taylor Gymnasium.
The Lady Steers won 77-66, while the Steers claimed a 91-84 victory.

Both TC teams are in action Saturday, hosting Our Lady of the Lake. The women tip off at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4 p.m.
Southwest takes on Paul Quinn in Dallas at 2 (women) and 4 (men) p.m.
WOMEN
Texarkana freshman Taylor Crabtree continued to perform well for the Lady Steers, scoring 26 points, while Waxahachie senior Paris Townsend had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Townsend also had three steals.
Also, Dallas freshman Aulexus Pickens added eight points and nine boards for the Lady Steers.
TC improves to 2-6 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Lady Mustangs fall to 3-5 and 0-1.

MEN
The Steers put up 50 points in the second half en route to the victory over the Steers.
Jerry Murphy, a senior from Houston, led the Steers with 19 points, four assists and three steals. James Martin, a junior from New Orleans, added 17 points, seven boards, a block and a steal.
Also in double figures for TC were Houston junior Dominique Phelgm (16 points, 5 rebounds) and Washington sophomore Christian Bryant (10 points, 3 assists).
The Steers improve to 2-10 on the season and 1-0 in conference, while Southwest falls to 3-6 and 0-1.
