Two Rusk men arrested in Cherokee County on capital murder charges

Two Rusk men have been charged with capital murder by terroristic threat after a Cherokee County shooting.
Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell said deputies responded shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday to a call about a shooting at a residence on County Road 2117 in the Maydelle community, which is located between Palestine and Rusk.

Campbell said deputies found Trevor Lawson, 18, had been fatally shot. Several people were at the house and deputies determined an altercation had taken place, Campbell said.
Deputies arrested Cody Ray Roberts, 17, on Wednesday in connection with the shooting.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Jontae Jamaile Johnson, 20.
Johnson and Roberts were charged with capital murder by terroristic threat, according to Cherokee County Jail records.
They were being held in the Cherokee County Jail on $1 million bonds, according to the weekly jail activity report sent Tuesday.
Campbell said Lawson’s body was taken to Southeast Texas Forensics Center in Tyler for an autopsy.

Campbell said representatives from his office were continuing to investigate the shooting.
