GO & DO: New art exhibits open; Junk Hippy part of Hit The Bricks on Saturday

Two art shows are opening in Tyler this weekend. The Tyler Museum of Art is debuting “Apertures of the Mind: Works by Abhidnya Ghuge” on Friday and Arcadia Art Show Vol. 3 opens in exhibit space at the Martin Walker Law Firm following a reception Saturday. 

Ghuge, who teaches art at The University of Texas at Tyler, is inspired by henna designs of her native India. Her work explores themes of community, time and value.

On view are hand-carved woodblocks, ink and gouache drawings and mixed-media wall pieces. Ghuge also created a large on-site installation featuring images transposed onto paper.

The exhibit will be on view through Dec. 2 at the museum, 1300 S. Mahon Ave., on the TJC campus. 

The reception marking the opening of the third annual juried Arcadia Art Show is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at 121 N. Spring Ave., the site of the old Arcadia Theater.



Best in Show and People’s Choice selections will be announced. 

Featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and print-making, the show will be on view through Feb. 12, 2019, during the law firm’s office hours. 

HIT THE BRICKS

The second Saturday Hit the Bricks returns to downtown Tyler. 

The Junk Hippy sale throughout the day will have dozens of vendors offering vintage, handmade, repurposed and antique goods around the downtown square.

Vendors offering food, crafts and plants and live entertainment are part of the Fall Market at the Goodman 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Goodman Museum, 624 N. Broadway Ave. A farmers market will take place Saturday at 302 S. Broadway Ave..

Gallery Main Street, Tyler Public Library and Smith County Historical Society also will have activities.  

GREGG COUNTY FAIR 

The Gregg County Fair opens Friday and continues through Sept. 15 at 1123 Jaycee Drive, Longview. 

The fair opens 6 p.m. weekdays and 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sunday. General admission tickets are $6. Patrons pay extra to ride the rides on the midway.

Fresh produce and other goods can be found at three farmers markets every Saturday morning in Tyler.

  • The Rose City Farmers Market: 236 S. Broadway Ave.
  • The East Texas State Fair Farmers Market: the fairgrounds, 2000 W. Front St.
  • Tyler Farmers Market: south parking lot of Broadway Square Mall, 4601 S. Broadway Ave.

GALLERY MAIN STREET

Gallery Main Street, 110 W. Erwin St., is presenting “Assemblies,” an exhibition of collages, through Oct. 9.The gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

CHILDREN’S CLOTHING CONSIGNMENT SALE

Harvey Convention Center is the site of the Children’s Clothing Consignment Sale 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. The sale continues Sept. 14 and 15.
