NO. 16 TCU 55, SOUTHERN U. 7

FORT WORTH — Shawn Robinson threw three touchdown passss and ran for two more scores while playing only the first half in TCU’s opening blowout.

The Horned Frogs scored on their first six drives to take a 38-7 lead before fellow sophomore Michael Collins, a former transfer from Penn, took over after halftime.

Derius Davis caught a 12-yard scoring pass from Robinson and the true freshman later returned a punt 73 yards for a score as the Frogs won their 17th consecutive home opener under coach Gary Patterson.

NORTH TEXAS 46, SMU 23



DENTON (AP) — Mason Fine threw for 444 yards and three touchdowns, Kemon Hall had a pick-6 and DeAndre Torrey scored on a 96-yard kickoff return in North Texas’ 46-23 win over Southern Methodist University in a season opener on Saturday night.

The Mean Green had a 27-1 first-down advantage and 36-0 lead with 13:11 left to play after Fine threw two TD strikes to Jalen Guyton and one to Nic Smith, and Hall picked off a Ben Hicks pass for a 36-yard score.

OLE MISS 47, TEXAS TECH 27

HOUSTON (AP) — Jordan Ta’amu threw for 336 yards and two touchdowns and Scottie Phillips ran for a career-high 204 yards and two more scores to give Mississippi a 47-27 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.

Phillips extended Mississippi’s lead to 37-20 when scampered 65 yards for a touchdown with about seven minutes left in the third quarter.

Da’Leon Ward’s second touchdown on a 9-yard run got Texas Tech within 10 later in the third, but Ta’amu found A.J. Brown for a 34-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the fourth quarter to make it 44-27.

NO. 18 MISSISSIPPI STATE 63, SFA 6

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Keytaon Thompson threw for 364 yards and five touchdowns, Mississippi State had 17 tackles for a loss and the 18th-ranked Bulldogs cruised to a 63-6 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday night in the season opener.

Joe Moorhead won his first game as Mississippi State’s head coach, and the playbook showed some of the downfield passing prowess he’s promised over the past months. The Bulldogs had completions of 53, 84, 27 and 30 yards for touchdowns.

Stephen F. Austin made two field goals. The Lumberjacks had 254 total yards. Foster Sawyer was 10 of 27 passing for 147 yards.

RUTGERS 35, TEXAS STATE 7

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — After season-opening losses the past two seasons against ranked Washington, Rutgers’ third-year coach Chris Ash started with a win for the first time in his tenure.

Raheem Blackshear and Jonathan Hilliman had two touchdowns apiece to lead Rutgers past Texas State 35-7 on Saturday in a season opener.

Texas State was led by sophomore quarterback Will Jones III, who was making his first collegiate start. He went 6 of 19 for 79 yards and an interception while also rushing for 33 yards on 14 carries before being replaced by freshman Tyler Vitt in the fourth quarter.

NO. 7 OKLAHOMA 63, FLORIDA ATLANTIC 14

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Kyler Murray, taking over for Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, passed for 209 yards and two touchdowns to lead Oklahoma.

Murray connected on 9 of 11 passes in just under one half. The first-round Major League Baseball draft pick also ran for 23 yards on four carries. It was Murray’s second college start since transferring from Texas A&M after the 2015 season.

Oklahoma led 42-0 at halftime — the most points the Sooners have scored in a first half since 2008. Oklahoma outgained Florida Atlantic 650 yards to 324.

NO. 9 AUBURN 21, NO. 6 WASHINGTON 16

ATLANTA (AP) — Jatarvious Whitlow ran 10 yards for a touchdown with 6:15 remaining and the Auburn defense came through at the end, leading the No. 9 Tigers a 21-16 victory over No. 6 Washington that provided a big boost to their resume in the very first game of the season Saturday.

Trailing 16-15 after missing a two-point conversion on their opening drive of the game, Auburn drove 76 yards in 10 plays for the winning score. Jarrett Stidham kept the drive going early with a 12-yard pass to Chandler Cox on third-and-9.

NO. 12 NOTRE DAME 24, NO. 14 MICHIGAN 17

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Brandon Wimbush connected on a long touchdown pass to help No. 12 Notre Dame jump out to a big first-half lead, Te’von Coney and the defense made it stand with a late takeaway, and the Fighting Irish beat No. 14 Michigan 24-17 on Saturday night as the rivalry returned after a three-year hiatus.

A Green-out crowd welcomed the Wolverines back to Notre Dame Stadium and the Fighting Irish scored fast on their first two drives against a defense loaded with future NFL draft picks. Chris Finke hauled in a deep throw from Wimbush that went through a defender’s hands in traffic for a 43-yard score to put Notre Dame up 14-0 midway through the first half.
