City celebrates its volunteers

Volunteer Tyler is the city’s program to engage volunteers in municipal government.
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, Volunteer Tyler scheduled activities to honor those who give their time to city departments.

The city has more than 200 volunteers serving in 28 different departments. Volunteer Tyler encourages participants to use their talents and skills to make the community a better place to live, work and visit.
Volunteer opportunities include internships, vehicle services, museum docent, clerical work, special event assistance, recycling coordinator and more.
To kick off Volunteer Week, volunteers attended “Breakfast With the Council” on Wednesday before the City Council meeting. In addition, Mayor Martin Heines issued a proclamation declaring City of Tyler Volunteer Week.
Two volunteers were honored with Shining Star awards: JoAnn Bright received the award for first quarter of 2018 and Mindy Lyon was the recipient for second quarter.
Volunteer Tyler is also celebrating at a number of venues throughout the week to promote its many volunteer opportunities. It will have a table at UT Tyler and Tyler Junior College on Monday and Wednesday. More table events include the Tyler Senior Center and Caldwell Zoo on Thursday and Saturday.
