The American Southwest Conference home office in Richardson has been keeping UT Tyler sports information director Jeff Williford busy in the autumn as the Patriots keep grabbing Player of the Week honors.

This week was no different as cross country and golf snagged both the male and female honors, while women’s soccer added another award.

HARRIERS HONORED AGAIN

Fresh off a record-breaking weekend in Ohio, two Patriots received ASC Cross Country Runners of the Week.

Carly Kitts is being honored for the third time this season, while Conner Benson is being tabbed for the second time.

The Patriots competed in the prestigious Wilmington College Pre-Nationals Meet in Wilmington, Ohio.

Kitts, a senior from Midlothian, broke her own school record in the women’s 6K with a clocking of 22 minutes, 11.02 seconds.

The UT San Antonio transfer finished 31st out of 321 runners, while teammates Brittany Brunson (junior from Austin) and Krista Painter (freshman from Mission Viejo, California) also bettered the previous UT Tyler 6K record.

Benson, a junior from Humble, set a new school record in the 8K (25:09.54) against some of the top-ranked NCAA Division III teams in the nation. Benson finished 52nd out of 375 runners.

The Patriots will compete in the Mississippi College Invitational on Saturday in Clinton, Mississippi.

HITTING THE LINKS

After capturing medalist honors in the Al Jones Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament on Tuesday in Tyler, it was only natural juniors Laura Lindsey and Buddy Hallman would be ASC Golfers of the Week.

Lindsey was named the Women’s Golfer of the Week for leading the Patriots to the championship of the tournament held at The Cascades Golf Club.

The Montgomery linkster scored the only round below par at 3-under in the first round and followed with a 79 second-round score to win by three strokes (148) over teammate Jordan Sloane (151).

On the men’s side, Hallman pulled off the same feat as Lindsey, leading the Patriots to the win.

Hallman, from Richmond, carded a tournament-low 5-under 66 in the first round and followed with a par score in the second round (71) to win by three strokes (137).

Hallman’s 66 is a personal best in fall play and is tied for the lowest round scored among American Southwest Conference golfers.

Both UT Tyler men’s and women’s teams will compete in the prestigious Golfweek Fall Invitational Oct. 12-14 in Sandestin, Florida.

VOLLEYBALLERS

The UT Tyler volleyball team dropped just its second game in eight American Southwest Conference matches, falling 3-0 to East Texas Baptist in Marshall on Tuesday.

The Patriots managed 35 kills, but committed 22 attack errors.

UT Tyler (9-7, 6-2) could not overcome a strong Tigers team, falling 25-15, 25-21, 25-16.

Rebekah Maner, a freshman from Somerset, and Brieanne Brown, a freshman from Belton, finished the night with nine kills apiece to lead the team, while Shabronda Prox, a sophomore from Kaufman, led the way defensively with 10 digs.

The Patriots will host rival UT Dallas at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Herrington Patriot Center.

ON THE PITCH

UT Tyler women’s soccer newcomer Morgan Monzingo was been named the ASC Offensive Player of the Week. Monzingo tied a UT Tyler record by scoring three goals in a 5-0 win over LeTourneau on Saturday in Tyler.

Monzingo, a sophomore from Cedar Hill, scored the third hat trick in UT Tyler women’s soccer history and first since 2010.

Monzingo, a transfer from Paris Junior College, currently is tied for third in the ASC in goals scored with seven.

The Patriot women are 5-1 overall and 1-0 in ASC play.

The Patriot soccer squads are on the road today (vs. Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas) and Saturday (vs. UT Dallas in Richardson).

Today, matches are set for 1 (women) and 3 (men) p.m.

On Saturday, games are slated for 5 (women) and 7 (men) p.m.

The UT Tyler men are 4-1-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.
