I think you all need to go and read the whole bill; not the spin put out by the fair tax web sites, but the bill 1025 in the house. Some of what you will learn:

1. Homeowners will be responsible for tax on money paid to domestic help such as housekeepers and gardeners.

2. Large sellers, who collect more than 100,000 in taxes in a year (435,000 is sales) will be required to pay their taxes on a weekly basis.

3. The states that have sales tax now will be responsible for collecting the tax.

4. The states collecting the tax will be responsible for audits and will have the authority to garnish wages, place liens on property, and collect a 1% per month penalty on uncollected taxes..

5. To get the prebate, every household will have to file a form with the federal government yearly and provide social security numbers for all living in the house over 2 years old.

6. The federal government will send out checks on a monthly basis, provided you have submitted the proper documention.

7. The state collection agency will remit all dollars due to the federal government on a weekly basis.

ARE ANY OF YOU GETTING SCARED YET?

By the way, the state of Texas will receive 1/4 of 1% of the tax collected for the feds for this wonderful thing they are willing to do.

I could go on but great grandson is here. Happy Reading!

I'm glad to hear you are reading the bill. Does anything really scare you more than the current state of affairs? Isn't it scary that the IRS can audit individuals? Isn't it scary that the government knows how much income you earn? Isn't it scary that the current tax code has an order of magnitude more points of collection than the FairTax? Isn't it scary that long-term capital gains are taxed at a much lower rate than earned income? Isn't it scary that there is an hidden embedded tax in the price of all goods and services, and that people below the poverty line pay this tax as well as payroll taxes? Doesn't any of that scare you?

With all due respect Bill, you did not provide anything scary. The state of our current system and its ease of manipulation is scary. The Marxist style tax code with its 65,000 (approx) pages of code, of which no one person can decipher the same as another, is scary. Since your opinion of the Fair Tax is a negative one please provide the positive aspects of the current tax code so we understand your point of view more efficiently. I am a current benefactor of our burdensome redistribution of wealth system (three children) and still feel the Fair Tax is a much more equitable and transparent means of funding our government. In closing, your point about states collecting the tax is by far a positive considering they already have the infrastructure to do so; not to mention they are paid a fair and untaxed fee for their efforts. I look forward to a spirited and respectful debate sir, have a great day.
