Post Subject: Re: Noriega's Stance on Issues Read Article
Marvin -
So I can't spell Czechoslovakia, probably because it no longer exists. Still they say with old-timers memory problems, you remember things from long ago but can't remember things from today. It is not surprising then that McCain is worried about Russia hurting Czechoslovakia.
Now about Noriega's plans for Education, Energy and the Economy:
Cornyn's site says the following:
Education:
• The public school system is the bedrock of our K-12 education efforts, and I support policies that strengthen it along with the entire education system. • I believe that all parents - regardless of race or socio-economic status - should have the opportunity to select a school that will better meet their children's needs and improve their future. • While federal funding can be used to improve the education system, we must not forget that local decisions and local control are the keys to improving our education system. We must allow local school boards greater flexibility to reduce regulation and use federal funds as they see fit, rather than mandating national standards and curricula. • Local schools need to be held accountable by testing for real results.
Energy and Environment:
• The United States has become too dependent on other nations for approximately sixty percent of the oil it consumes. This reliance on foreign oil allows other nations to dictate the price of energy in our country and threatens our economic security. • Encouraging conservation, developing alternative energy sources, and increasing the responsible production of our domestic sources of fossil fuels will help make our nation more energy independent. • I strongly support reasonable oil and gas exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Gulf of Mexico. • Developing a strong, comprehensive energy plan is a top priority for me. • Texas has more highway miles than any other state. Our transportation corridor is vital to continued prosperity, and I will ensure that Texas transportation needs are met. • Agriculture is vital to the Texas economy; one in five jobs in our state is related to the agriculture industry. • Our environment is a beautiful gift; we must preserve this gift for our children and grandchildren.
Economy:
• Our policies must encourage savings, investment, and the creation of wealth for people of all income levels. • It is my goal to create an environment that fosters economic production, job growth, and an increase in real wages. • The key to economic prosperity is to reduce the high level of taxation on American citizens and businesses that stunts economic growth and limits job creation. By using tax relief to help Americans keep more of what they earn, the economy will grow, resulting in new jobs to increase our tax base. • Congress should carefully steward taxpayer money, not spend it limitlessly. By eliminating excessive spending and increasing economic activity over time, there will be a reduction in the current budget deficit.
Now all of the above are generalities spelling out Cornyn's views. In all fairness he goes on to list bills and such that he voted for etc, but then he has been a Senator for awhile.
Now Noreiga has laid out his views which (hopefully) you quoted accurately. This is a road map to what he believes in and he's put forth some ideas. Those ideas may or may not be workable and he may discover or develope better ideas once elected. Cornyn may the advantage here as he has his US Senate record to look at.
As with any non-incumbant, you can only look at what he says he stands for and then vote for the new guy if you do not like the incumbant. Like it or not, that's politics. Now I do not like that McCain introduced the senate bill S1025. It is a foolish idea and, to me, reflects on his judgement. You may not agree.
A good example of issues is the current housing foreclusure crisis. It's my opinion that by the time the next President and congress are elected it will be too late. Those who took out foolish loans will have lost their homes and as we saw with Indymac and Bear Sterns, the financial institutions doomed to fail will have already failed.
What then will happen? Hopefully the next President and congress, no matter what the makeup or who gets elected, will put in place some sensible regulations to avoid a repeat in the future.
Now as to the 200 million you refer to, the INDYMAC mess will probably cost us that much with the FDIC bailout and believe me there will be more.
Here is something that Cornyn did partially right:
• Supporting Increased Aid for Students Studying Math and Science: Supported the creation of a new, five-year, $4.5 billion education grant program that awards competitive grants for students pursuing a degree or major in the fields of math or science.
The problem is that this addresses college. We start falling behind in these areas in grade school, where at the end of the 4th grade we lead in this area, by 8th grade we are about average in Math and Science, and by 12th grade we close near the bottom. We need something in grade school and high school to attack the problem.
In summary let me say that I am glad you visited the site and looked at the issues. It has been the thrust of a lot of what I have written on these pages; vote issues - not rhetoric. I know that depending on political leanings, we could both read the same thing and one of us would be positive, one negative and maybe on some things we may even agree.
Still, all I ask is that the issues be the focus and when the reader votes, they vote on issues, not because of what Oberman says or Limbaugh says. I believe Obama and the Democrats need to take control for awhile because we have moved too far to the right. When we got too far the the left, I felt differently. You see it's a matter of balance. This balance is what keeps us free and strong
Obama for President Noreiga for US Senator.
PS The reason Noriega's military is important now is because he has had his boots on the ground in Afghanistan where Cornyn has never even served. I believe it gives Noriega the better perspective.
