Marvin - actually, I realized what you were referring to AFTER I posted the message. :) Oops.
Hmmmm...what's worse - a stereotype about age or being compared to suicidal cult followers? I think I would have prefered the former. But thank you for your objective explanation.
I know people are not perfect, and there is no "perfect" church. I'd just like to find one where people actually know who Jesus is and try act like him instead of an interpretation of him that serves their own agenda. For instance, I have a hard time believing Jesus would do anything but welcome immigrants with open arms when they are leaving a country with a corrupt government and police who regularly rape women. Also, I have heard the following comments from people in church:
"If women would dress more modestly, there wouldn't be as many rapes." - straight from a minister's mouth during a sermon
"You don't want to enroll your kids at Chapel Hill; there are too many blacks there, if you know what I mean." - from a Deacon to a minister moving to Tyler
"God isn't present in every church. There are "dead churches" where all they do is sit there, sing, and listen to a sermon. God doesn't like that - he only goes to churches where people get up, get excited, wave their hands and really glorify him" - paraphrase from a little girl in the documentary, Jesus Camp
I don't think Jesus has much to do with what goes on in churches these days. I am pretty sure, however, that I can stay much closer to God's word when I pray directly instead of going through an organization that thrives on power and control.
