But the point is, you can turn off the TV. It frightens me to hear a parent say "I can't control." If the parent can't, who can. But if you condition a 5 year old to grow up only on TV as the babysitter, instead of 1) Legos 2) coloring books 3) drawing 4) turning cleaning into a game 5) writing (insert person) a "letter" 6) puzzles 7) playing a creative game--you get the idea, then said child will NO MATTER what, grow up indoctrinated by everything on TV. I was that child and I know. I expected if I ran to my room crying, a Carol Brady response was to follow. It's not just beer commercials. I may sound like I haven't a clue, but I have. I hear so much hostility and you are fighting and justifying. YOu have aired this for the paper to see. It's time to turn off the TV--or accept the consequences of your free babysitter. I have seen this too much in my profession and friends. The time to fix it IS at age 5, not 13.

You people act like because I don't agree with some of these commercials, like that's all I let my children do. I don't think that allowing them an hour or so of tv time is acting as a free babysitter. I don't think any of you have a window into my world, so stop thinking you do. How fair would it be to never let them watch anything because I don't have time to sit and make sure that nothing is airing that they shouldn't see? They rarely get any tv time during the week because we're always too busy getting ready for the rest of the week. But okay, I'm a bad parent because my children are allowed to sit and watch it at all. I'll take that. I know that what I'm doing as a parent is right, and frankly, I don't need a strangers opinion on one comment to make me feel any different. And yes, I can control, if I sit there the entire time and screen commercials. Which I don't have time to do, that being the reason they don't get much tv.
