It may not be possible for all people to not drive on the same day but most people get two days off per week. If you didn't drive one day per week you would still decrease consumption. Other ideas are to car-pool where possible, ie to get groceries, go to the park with a neighbor, etc.
Another idea would be to declare one day a week that nobody pulled up to a gas pump. Just plan ahead some and we could all not fill up on say Monday or Saturday.
Truckers could refuse to drive on weekends thus disrupting the flow of goods. That would surely get someone's attention.
Maybe none of these ideas are good. Maybe we should start a massive letter writing campaign to our Representatives in congress demanding some action.
Oil is bought on the commodities market. Margin rates determine how much an investor can buy. For instance a margin rate of 50% means an investor can tie up twice as much oil. If we demand higher margin rates, speculators will have to put in more money or sell contracts to buy oil. This will drop the price of a barrell of oil. We should all push for this. Example: If I have 50,000 to invest I can buy 100,000 worth of oil contracts and I owe 50,000. If they raised the margin rate to 60% I would have to deposit another 10,000 and if I could not I would have to sell thus driving down the cost of oil.
