Bill - you will not like me after this letter but here goes. I personally don't like the idea of any tuition credit in exchange for giving back to the community. That's me. That is tooooo much government for me. I prefer people just taking responsibililty for their own lives and the decisions they make. It is not the job of the government. We have made it easier to not achieve then it is to stay home and collect a monthly check.

If you look at the bigger picture as to why kids are struggling in school so much I think you can blame it on the women's movement in the 1970's. It forced women out of the home and into the workforce. I personally don't buy the equal work for equal pay because I think women take advantage of it (here come the letters!). It put a strain on the male workforce and made it impossible for men to be the sole provider. It also brought on millions of divorces and made it so easy to just quit. Families began to break down and BOOM! Here we are with generations of kids that just don't care.

Having that said, I believe that no matter if you are a single parent working two jobs (which my middler sister did), it is your job to educate and encourage your child to learn. Kids are not dumber than they use to be! They are lazy and want the quick money, the quick ride to success. They value nothing because they have worked for nothing.

I am NOT putting all kids in this catagory - don't get me wrong. But the kids that refuse to learn are rude and disruptive in class are lazy.

Where is the money going to come from for after school programs? Me and You! These kids won't go to after school programs because the parents don't care if they do. There is no accountability. They barely wait for the bell to ring before they take off. I have seen it over and over. It would be a waste of time and money I'm afraid.

I honestly don't know what the answer is -

Every time I get out of the pool, they keep dragging me back in.... The fact that one does not believe in a system is not the issue but to blame our educational woes on mothers who work (especially this close to Mother's Day) is wrong.

I believe Texas' trouble is a result of state mandates on our teachers to meet a standard that flies in the face of what education is about. Not all students learn at the same level. Anyone teaching small children knows one will learn differently than another. There are some who can orally answer questions and yet when it comes to putting it down on paper they become frustrated. There are others who can write beautiful works but have difficulty in verbalization. So to what standard are our children to meet?

I realize that the education we received many years ago is now antiquated but at least teachers had authority to teach.

Heidi and Kevin

Kevin - I hope you did not think I was blaming single or working mothers for the woes of our educational system. To the contrary, I was just pointing out that unlike the 50's when I grew up, things have changed. While my mother had time to spend because my father was able to support us, todays families are different.

It is not just state mandates that interfere with education. Federal mandates, especially ones like no child left behind, also interfere and often federal mandates for education and other things are not funded and that shifts the economic burden to the states.

Heidi I do not know why you think I would not like you because you express your opinion. However, when I suggest this administration has made a mess of the war, the economy, the infrastructure, and the environment, you tell me I should try supporting them once in awhile.

When I suggest a possible solution to a problem, recognizing I'm not sure if it is right, you say you and I will have to pay for it. Then you really get out there blaming woman's lib, which I'm not going to touch with a ten foot pole. However, I might remind you that it was woman's lib that gave my mother the right to vote, oh and you too.

I guess the bottom line is a question I've asked before. What government services or programs do YOU think we should pay for with our taxes?

Vote Obama
Vote Noriega for US Senate
