The sad part is we know it, but our short term goal oriented political leadership can't seem to get motivated to come up with a long term plan. They can outlaw things, like flush toilets that actually get the job done, incandescent light bulbs, and 2 cycle gasoline engines.
Anytime a move like that is made, it should have been accompanied with a committment to R & D, and a clear plan to keep our industrial base whole. That is what the japanese did, and where did they learn it? From the US of 50 years ago.
Where did we go wrong? We voted ourselves a political aparatus that is still protesting the Vietnam war and fighting the "establishment", ever pushing an entrenched idea that corporate America must pay and pay and pay and should never be trusted when involved at any level with government. How utterly stupid, in the eyes of the asian sucess model, but accepted practice here.
That must change, or we will be rolled over again, and again, and again.
That is exactly what they're doing. Why can't we?
