An inmate's death remained under investigation Tuesday after he was taken from the Anderson County Jail to

Palestine Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said 50-year-old Jeffrey Mallachi Eastman was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday in Elkhart for public intoxication.

Taylor said the man told deputies he was walking in a convenience store looking for his wife, who works at the store.

"We had an EMS unit respond to the scene to check him out, but he refused treatment, so we transported him to jail and booked him in," he said.

Taylor said the man began having problems, and jailers called EMS to transport him to the hospital, where he died.
