Arp man charged with murder
Staff Reports

An Arp man remained in jail Sunday afternoon charged with murder.

Richard Lee Hunt, 51, of Arp was charged with murder on Saturday for the death of Tony Tillman, 53, also of Arp, according to information released late Saturday by John Moore, public information officer for the Smith County Sheriff’s Office
.

Tillman was shot during an altercation on Tuesday at a home in the 15000 block of Texas Highway 135 near Arp. Tillman had been hospitalized in Tyler since the shooting and died Saturday afternoon from his injuries, Moore said.

After receiving a 911 call at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies arrived at the scene and found Hunt and Tillman in the area. Both were suffering from gunshot wounds and were transported to a Tyler hospital for treatment.

Tillman suffered multiple gunshot wounds caused by a weapon fired by Hunt, Moore said. Hunt suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the leg during the altercation.

Early Wednesday after receiving treatment for his wound, Hunt was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Smith County Jail. Later, Hunt was released on bond.

Hunt was rearrested Saturday on the new charge of first-degree murder and is back in the Smith County Jail. State District Judge Jack Skeen set Hunt’s bond at $750,000.

Tillman’s body was sent to Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.
