Henderson Chamber honors community members at banquet
A good crowd was on-hand as community members were recognized at this week’s Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet, according to a chamber representative.
Chamber Executive Director Judy Sewell said the event, held Thursday, went well and drew close to 400 people.
Jennifer Brown, assistant warden at the East Texas Treatment Facility, received the Louise Jacks Award for Outstanding Young Woman of the Year for 2012, and Henderson High School Principal Terry Everitt received the John R. Alford Award for Outstanding Young Man of the Year for 2012.
They were both chosen for their community service, Ms. Sewell said.
It’s “their contributions to the community — all the things they’ve been involved in,” she said. “It runs from personal contributions to work contributions, their benevolent organizations they’re involved in — any kind of volunteer things that they do.”
Ms. Brown is president-elect of the Henderson Rotary Club and graduated from Leadership Henderson. She also has a master’s degree in organizational leadership and was a lead counselor for Celebrate Recovery at New Life Church, among other things, according to the chamber.
Ms. Brown, 40, said the honor was “amazing” and not expected.
“Even though you work hard for the community, you always want somebody to see that. It’s great being recognized. It’s great to know someone saw,” she said.

She believes she stood out, she said, because “it’s about service above self, and I think that’s what I portray, and I think the community saw that.”
Ms. Brown said she also is pleased to join the women who received the award before her. Additionally, she said it must be rewarding for Louise Jacks.
“We’re demonstrating her legacy of giving to the community. That’s exciting to me just being amongst those who got it before and (those who will) after,” she said.
Before Everitt became principal at Henderson High School, he served as a teacher and coach and as an assistant principal.
He also was a division leader for United Way and was president of the Henderson Baseball Association, according to the chamber. Like Ms. Brown, he graduated from Leadership Henderson, and he is involved in his church, served on the chamber legislative and education committees and “has contributed much volunteer time and labor as well as resources for various schools, groups and organizations in the community,” according to the chamber.
Everitt, a 40-year-old Henderson native, said he is honored and humbled to receive the award.
When asked what set him apart, he said as an educator, he is “about kids.”
“Really I think we need to provide a positive male role model, and I strive to do that and provide an example to kids (as a) man that serves the community,” he said.
He added, “Henderson is a place where my wife and I are both from. I want to do what I can to make Henderson the best place it can be (for families), and that’s why I get involved and serve.”
Other awards were the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2012, which went to Thomas Ray Goode; Ambassador of the Year for 2012, which went to Sue Plummer; and the Silver Star of the Year for 2012, which went to Rosalee Burns.
