Tyler set to unveil three newest historic markers
Staff Reports

The city of Tyler will host a ceremony to unveil three new Half Mile of History markers in downtown Tyler at 10 a.m. today, according to a press release from the city.

The markers are part of the Half-Mile of History heritage trail and honor Mattie Jones, a pioneer Tyler teacher and civic worker; Joe Zeppa, who immigrated to the U.S. from Italy when he was 12 and began Delta Drilling Company at the beginning of the East Texas oil boom; and Sarah McClendon, longtime Whitehouse reporter who was born and raised in Tyler. The unveiling will take place at Gallery Main Street, 110 W. Erwin St.

The city of Tyler’s historic preservation program, the Half Mile of History, resulted from a recommendation that came out of the Tyler 1st planning process, the press release stated. The fifth goal of the Historic Preservation Chapter is to “promote and display diverse aspects of Tyler’s history to enhance resident and visitor awareness of its importance.”
