Tyler man arraigned for grocery assault
A Tyler man remained in jail Monday afternoon after allegedly assaulting an elderly man and stabbing a local grocery store employee Saturday.

A large fight broke out at the Super Monterey grocery store, 510 SSW Loop 323, at 11:43 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the department.

Gerardo Bastida, 46, is accused of hitting an elderly man with a crutch inside the store, whose head was bleeding when officers arrived, the release states.

A store employee attempted to stop the assault and was stabbed in the left leg by Bastida, the release states.

Store employees detained Bastida by the time officers arrived. He was booked into the Smith County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

His bond was set at $50,000 for the two charges.
