Jacksonville detective recognized for efforts to improve shooting range

Jacksonville Police Detective Sgt. Daniel Franklin was recently recognized for his efforts to renovate and update the city’s target shooting range, the city announced this week.
Jacksonville Police Detective Sgt. Daniel Franklin was recently recognized for his efforts to renovate and update the city’s target shooting range, the city announced this week.
The Jacksonville Police Department held a small ceremony Thursday morning to dedicate the range in honor of Franklin, according to a news release.
The news release states that Franklin, along with others, changed the range “from a facility that was just barely adequate into something that the department can be quite proud of” without using city funds.
"For years this range was nothing more than a berm, an awning and some holes in the ground where you could put your pegs so that your target would stand up,” Detective Javier Guerra said in a news release. “We now have turning targets, reactive steel targets, a dueling tree and a rifle gong for long-range shooting. And it has practically all been done through Daniel’s blood, sweat and tears.”

Franklin said in a news release that he took on the project because he hoped that range improvements would better training capabilities and make more competent officers.
Police Chief Reece Daniel added, “New and improved training options translate directly into better performance in the field and better preparedness for the situations that we encounter on the streets. The extra training our officers can now receive on this range may make the difference between an officer coming home or not one night.”
