TJC students heading for Japan

Japan will get a taste of Texas and the Apache spirit when a group of Tyler Junior College students visit the country later this month.
The TJC Apache Belles and Apache Band plan to spend their spring break in Japan, where they will entertain U.S. troops stationed at Yokosuka and Atsugi Naval Bases near Tokyo, according to a college news release.
Almost 100 travelers, including the students, alumni, parents and staff, plan to take the 11-day trip from March 8 to 18.
The Apache Belles and Band will perform a Texas-themed show.
Audiences will include military members, residents and dignitaries in Yachiyo, which is a Tyler Sister City, according to the news release.
“A delegation from Yachiyo visited Tyler in late 2012, so we are excited to reconnect with our Yachiyo friends and return the gesture of camaraderie that they so graciously showed us during their Texas visit,” Dr. Kim Russell, TJC vice president of advancement and external affairs, said, according to the news release.

Apache Belles Director Jasilyn Schaefer said the purpose of the trip is to “go to the very heart of what TJC does for its students.”
In addition to the performances, the group will visit other sites and shrines in and around Tokyo, Tokyo Disneyland and Lake Ashi. Weather permitting, they also plan to get an up-close look at Mt. Fuji, according to the news release.
“This will be an unforgettable cultural and educational experience for these students,” Dr. Russell said, according to the news release. “Not only will they be performing for our troops and representing TJC and Tyler, they will be experiencing a place unlike anything they’ve ever seen before. This will be the experience of a lifetime.”
