Cherokee County Sheriff's investigate shooting
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred earlier today.
Sheriff James Campbell said Garrett Curtis, 22, of the Alto area, was at orientation at Rusk State Hospital as a new employee when he left around lunch time.
He said Curtis returned to the state hospital about 12:30 p.m. with a gunshot wound.
“He was by himself…We're not sure where it (the shooting) happened,” Campbell said.
Curtis was flown by helicopter to Tyler and is currently in the intensive care unit at East Texas Medical Center. Campbell said authorities are chasing various leads, but at this point, it is unknown who did the shooting or what motive there could have been.
