TJC offering night under the stars party

Those interested in viewing the night sky through telescopes can do so on the Tyler Junior College campus this weekend.
TJC’s Center for Earth & Space Science Education will have a star party beginning at dusk Saturday.
The free, public event is scheduled to start about 7 p.m. at the center, at 1411 E. Lake St. on the TJC main campus.
It is held in partnership with the Astronomical Society of East Texas and TJC’s Society of Physics Students/American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers, according to a TJC news release.
“We will have telescopes set up outside starting at dusk, and the show will go on no matter the weather,” center director Dr. Tom Hooten said, according to the news release.
Hooten said the science center also will be open to the public for free during the star party, and the live night sky will be projected in the dome theater.
“Science on the Half Shell” is the current science center exhibit and features the study of bivalve mollusks, which include clams, scallops, oysters and mussels.
Through the use of three interactive stations, the exhibit explores the principles of evolutionary biology and provides an understanding of how the tree of life of this commonplace and familiar group of animals has had meaningful applications on our everyday lives.
