Tyler ISD supporters rally in hopes of bond

Staff Reports

More than 50 people gathered before Thursday night's Tyler ISD board meeting to show their support for a bond election to upgrade and build new district facilities as part of a rally by the group “Tyler Proud.”

Those gathered, including children, chanted “Vote … Yes” and “Call the bond … Pass the Bond.”

If trustees call a May bond election and voters were to approve it, it would pay for remodeling of Rice and Dixie elementary schools; construction of three new middle schools; and construction of a career and technology education center to serve students at both high schools.

Earlier in the day, members of Grassroots America and a coalition called “No Excuses Tyler ISD” held a news conference to air their concerns about what they see as problems in the school district.

JoAnn Fleming, leader of the Grassroots group, cited concerns with academic progress, lack of teacher support and discipline issues in the school district. She said that if new buildings are constructed, it would just be a more expensive environment for the same problems.
