Dunbar files for Tyler ISD board seat
The Rev. Dr. Marty Dunbar on Monday filed for the District 6 seat on the Tyler ISD school board.
Dunbar, 40, is associate pastor at Marvin United Methodist Church, where he is preaching pastor for the Core Worship services, according to an emailed statement.
Born in Illinois and raised in Southlake, northwest of Dallas, he returned to his home community after college to serve at White’s Chapel UMC for 11 years before moving to Tyler in 2007.
During that time in Southlake, he experienced one of the premier school districts in the state and watched friends and church members serve with vision, passion and integrity, he said in the statement.
“I believe education is important for everyone to be successful in life,” he said. “I want to work toward an education that prepares our children for the present world and the future to come.”

Dunbar said this is accomplished by supporting teachers and administrators and creating facilities that provide the best opportunity to learn, according to his statement.
Dunbar serves on the steering committee for Tyler CAT 100, a venture involving the city of Tyler, Smith County, Leadership Tyler and the Chamber of Commerce.
He said his goal is to serve Tyler’s children, teachers, administrators and community.
“I know what it means to be a team player and work hard for a cause greater than ourselves,” he said, according to the email. “I know what it means to be responsible with others money and still build something great for future generations. God has gifted me with the ability to take complex things and make them simple. I think this will be an asset to the community, TISD and the school board.”
Dunbar and his wife, Jami, a registered nurse, have a daughter, Jillian, who attends Moore Middle School and two sons, Noah and Grayson, who attend Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy. The family is a member of Marvin United Methodist Church.
