New Chapel Hill ATV accident injures 2 girls Sunday at party
An ATV accident left two girls injured when the ATV they were on at a birthday party flipped.

Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said his deputies were dispatched to East Texas Medical Center Emergency Room shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday regarding an ATV accident that happened earlier in the 11700 block of Texas Highway 64 East, near New Chapel Hill.

Smith said the accident involved two juvenile girls, one of which suffered severe head trauma and currently is in critical condition. That girl had surgery on Sunday.

"The two girls were attending a birthday party and were riding an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV).  Witnesses stated they were traveling at an unsafe speed when they lost control of the ATV, ejecting both individuals," he said.

Smith said the girl with the more severe injuries was pinned underneath the ATV.  The second girl suffered moderate scrapes and bruises.
