UPDATE: Suspect in Henderson American Legion fatal shooting released on bond

UPDATE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 12:30 P.M.
Joe Watley, fatal shooting suspect in the death of Roy Lee Moore, posted a $150,000 bond and has been released from the Rusk County Jail.

The bond was set by Joe Sorrells Justice of the Peace Pct. 5 Rusk County.

Staff Reports

Authorities have identified a Rusk County man who was shot and killed Sunday morning at a Henderson American Legion Post.

The 53-year-old Henderson man, Roy Lee Moore, was shot several times in his upper body about 12:20 a.m. at the post, 601 Sand St., while attending a function, according to a news release from the Henderson Police Department.

Several people were trying to save the man when EMS arrived, the release states. The man was taken to a Kilgore hospital because of his "rapidly declining condition" but died from his injuries.

A 60-year-old man, Joe Watley, of Henderson, was attending the same function and is accused in the shooting.

As the victim got up from a table to go to another area in the post, he was shot several times.

Watley was arrested in the 300 block of Garden Lane and booked into the Rusk County Jail for first-degree murder. Henderson Police Lt. Craig Sweeney said Watley has been before a judge, but a bond was not set. An autopsy of the victim was ordered.

Sweeney said police are investigating whether a long-standing feud between Watley and Moore may have contributed to the shooting.

He said, if it is true that there was a long-standing argument between the two, he does not know what could have rekindled it.
