About 9 a.m. Friday, police were dispatched to an extended stay hotel on East Rusk Street in Jacksonville to an unwanted person on the property call, Sgt. Daniel Franklin said.
He said police responded and made contact with the manager, who told them an occupant may have been conducting illegal activities inside the room. So officers went to the room and knocked.
Franklin said Orenthal Jay Mallard eventually opened the door, and police could smell marijuana coming from the room.
Mallard, 36, was asked to leave, and police saw a woman in the room as well, he said. Franklin said officers then conducted a safety sweep of the room and found a pistol and marijuana.
At that point, Franklin said officers attempted to place Mallard in custody, but he pulled away and fled on foot. He said Mallard ran several city blocks and ended up hiding in a creek bed near the hotel.
Franklin said other officers responded to the area by then, and Officer Chase Berryhill found Mallard.
He said a struggle ensued in the creek, where Mallard struck Berryhill several times until the officer was able to maintain control of him and take him into custody.
Franklin said. He said a canine search was conducted around the vehicle, and the dog alerted on it, so police obtained search warrants for the hotel room and vehicle.
Officers found a large quantity of cash and drugs, magazines and bullets.
