Familiar faces taking over positions for city of Troup

Familiar faces will take over positions in the city of Troup.

City Clerk Buffie Deason was hired as the new city secretary, and Police Chief Pat Hendrix was tapped as the new assistant city administrator during Tuesday's city council meeting. Compensation for Hendrix, while he served as interim city administrator, also was approved.

Gene Cottle, who officially started as city administrator on Feb. 1, said there were multiple applications for the city secretary position, one of which was withdrawn.

But Ms. Deason has done clerk work for about six years and was "kind of a natural replacement" for Cheryl Jimerson, who resigned as city secretary in December to work in Henderson.

Cottle said the city is eliminating the clerk position, and Ms. Deason essentially will do both jobs, which includes elections, bookkeeping and maintaining ordinances.

"It's just her experience and just her knowledge of what she's doing already and her work ethic," he said of why she was a finalist for the position.

He said Hendrix was chosen to serve as assistant city administrator so someone would be available in his absence.

Cottle said he serves as chairman of the Smith County 911 Communications District and is occasionally out of town. Therefore, he said naming Hendrix to the position will provide a definite line of authority.

"I'm pleased with that, and it just makes sense to me," he said. "He did a very good job in the interim."

Hendrix will receive his chief salary as well as compensation for the time he officially served as interim.
