Future of Stewart Middle School to be discussed
The Tyler community is invited to attend a meeting tonight to discuss the future of Tyler ISD’s A.T. Stewart Middle School.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 1020 S. Lyons Ave., in Tyler.
TISD Superintendent Gary Mooring and several board members are scheduled to be there, organizers said.
In January, board members discussed the possibility of converting Stewart to a school of choice.
This could mean housing one of the district’s alternative campuses, PACE, at what is now Stewart.
PACE is a dropout prevention and recovery program for at-risk high school students in TISD, according to its website.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 1020 S. Lyons Ave., in Tyler.

PACE is a dropout prevention and recovery program for at-risk high school students in TISD, according to its website.
However, board members have discussed expanding this program, so it would be more of a “school of choice” for students who don’t thrive in the traditional high school environment.
Originally, the district considered putting Plyler Alternative School, the district’s disciplinary campus, at Stewart as well.
However, board President Michelle Carr said at the January workshop that is no longer the case.
The plan would be to keep Plyler at its current location and expand it when the district’s television station moves to the yet-to-be-built Career and Technology Center.
All of this is contingent upon the board calling, and the community passing, a bond issue because there would have to be room to move Stewart students to the newly built middle schools.
The board plans to vote on calling a bond election at a Feb. 21 meeting.
Donald Sanders, who is one of the people organizing the meeting, said he expects about 300 people to attend.
It will provide an opportunity for community members to voice concerns to district officials and hear their responses, he said.
