Lobby Day event lets teachers speak out
Staff Reports
The Texas American Federation of Teachers will have a Lobby Day event March 11 at the state Capitol and East Texans plan to participate.
Jamie Womack, Texas AFT East Texas lead organizer, said parents, teachers, retirees and community leaders are invited to join the local group traveling to the event.
Ms. Womack said appointments have been made to speak with state Sen. Kevin Eltife, R-Tyler, and state Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler.
However, she said they can make additional appointments if East Texans represented by other legislators decide to go.
If the legislators are called in to meetings that day, the group will speak with representatives from their offices, she said.

The goal is to make legislators aware of what teachers want “because we feel like we know what is best for our education system and what the kids need,” Ms. Womack said. “The future of Texas is dependent on our public school system and how successful we are.”
The group will leave Tyler about 6 a.m. on March 11 on a chartered bus. When they arrive at the Capitol, attendees should have time to watch committee meetings or the House or Senate in session before a noon lunch on the South Lawn, the Texas AFT rally and visits with legislators.
Those interested in traveling with the group need to reserve a space by calling 903-595-6651 or emailing tyleraft@att.net. It requires a deposit of $20 by cash or check to reserve a spot, which will be returned the day of the event.
