Ministry leaders gather for faith-based film

Christian ministry leaders in East Texas gathered Tuesday night for a screening of a new faith-based film, “Beyond the Farthest Star.”

Christian ministry leaders in East Texas gathered Tuesday night for a screening of a new faith-based film, “Beyond the Farthest Star.”
“Some of the responses we’ve been getting are “real,” “raw,” “incredible,” the film’s producer, Benjamin Dane, said at the event. “It’s a faith-based film, but it’s realistic.”
The common filmmaking dichotomy of realism and a message of faith is something that the filmmakers were acutely aware of at every stage of the process, writer/director Andrew Librizzi said.
“(The film) has universal themes and a compelling method,” he said. “It’s an intense journey, one that’s moving and believable, about restoration. It’s not as message-driven.”
The film is centered around a “dysfunctional” family, Librizzi said, which reflects much of American family life.
It’s one of the few faith-based films with a PG-13 rating and addresses a litany of prevalent issues, from alcoholism to cutting.
While Librizzi said he didn’t make it with a specific message, he hopes the deeper themes will resonate with Christians as well as people with no faith.
“I hope it transcends the four walls of the church,” he said. “It shows that God is touched by our feelings of weakness and that He gives beauty from ashes.”
The film’s distributor has yet to announce the release date, Dane said. Tentative dates are late April, early May or September.
