Saturday event brings together homeless, blood donors

When you think of the homeless, you might not think of them giving blood. But that’s exactly what two nonprofits are trying with a blood drive Saturday.

Hunger for Love, an organization that serves the under-resourced and homeless, is hosting a blood drive with Carter BloodCare during a community outreach ‘under the bridge’ from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 300 E. Valentine St.

“The idea is that the group that meets under the bridge receives a lot from the community, and this is a way for them to give back with something that they do have,” said Nyc Moy, donor recruitment consultant with Carter BloodCare.

Every week Hunger for Love serves warm breakfast to the members of our community who need assistance.

The nonprofit’s founder, Jason Eslicker, a senior at Robert E. Lee high school, thought a blood drive might do well with those they serve, he said.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity,” he said. “We don’t usually get to serve in that way.”

The public is encouraged to participate as well, according to a written release from Carter BloodCare.

During the month of February every blood donor will receive a free Dallas Stars hockey puck and a buy-one-get-one-free ticket offer to see the Dallas Stars play. Plus all donors will be entered to win other Dallas Stars experiences including luxury suite tickets complete with complimentary food and beverages. For details, go to gofightgive.org.

Blood donors for this drive will also receive Chick-Fil-A coupons and Walmart gift cards, Moy said.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they donate.

It’s a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood.
