TJC Board hears health sciences facility update
A plan for the new nursing and health sciences facility at Tyler Junior College is progressing.
TJC board members received an update Thursday about the status of the $50 million project and some of the new programs in the works.
The project is being paid for by $25 million in bond funds, with the remainder of the total coming from private donations and student user fees.
Tyler Junior College officials met this week with SmithGroupJJR, the architectural firm hired for the project.
The firm provided a general idea of what is planned for the facility. Dr. Rita Allen, assistant to the president for special projects, said it will be 150,000 square feet.
However, almost 27,000 square feet will be left as “shell space” for the future.
The existing programs that will be housed in the building include nursing (LVN and RN), dental hygiene, surgical technology, medical laboratory technology, radiologic technology, respiratory care and diagnostic medical sonography.
The campus health clinic and dental hygiene clinic also will be moved to the new building.
The new dental clinic will have 33 chairs, up from 13 in the existing facility.

Dr. Rita Allen, assistant to the president for special projects, said the key issues that department chairs and faculty members wanted addressed, such as more space, will be in this facility.
The college has made progress with its plans for three new programs. These include occupational therapy assistant, wellness and exercise specialist and physical therapy assistant.
Advisory committees have worked with the college to form the plans and curriculum needs for these programs.
All must be reviewed by the college’s curriculum and instruction committee, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools before TJC can launch them.
The plan is to have them in place for the fall 2014 semester. The building, however, will not open until spring 2015.
In other business, the board:
—Presented Sarah Van Cleef, vice president for business affairs and chief financial officer, and Carol Hutson, accounting services director/controller, with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
This is the 16th year in a row the college has received this award. It comes from the Government Finance Officers Association and recognizes governmental entities that go beyond minimum requirements and prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that indicate a spirit of transparency and full disclosure, according to a webpage about the award.
—Approved the hiring of L&L Asphalt Corp. to build a 72-space parking lot near the intersection of Magnolia Drive and East Lake Street. TJC will pay the company about $313,000 for the work, which should be completed before the fall semester.
—Approved the hiring of Broadcast Works out of Tyler to be the lead company in renovating the Rogers Student Center Apache Rooms. TJC will pay the company more than $418,000 barring additions or deductions to the work. The project is slated to begin Feb. 18 and end by March 31.
