Whitehouse beer, wine sales earn place on May ballot
The option for beer and wine sales will go before Whitehouse voters but not in Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 this May.
The city verified enough registered voter signatures in Whitehouse to place the proposition to legalize the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption on ballots, city secretary Stephanie Wright said. However, Smith County Election Administrator Karen Nelson said petitions for the same measure in JP Precinct 1 were not turned in by the deadline.
Petition gatherers needed 732 signatures to place the measure on ballots in Whitehouse. Ms. Wright said the city verified 832. Mrs. Nelson said 1,835 signatures were necessary by Jan. 27 for JP Precinct 1.
Texas Petition Strategies, the Austin-based consulting firm that circulated petitions in the city of Tyler last year, is handling the petition drive for signatures from registered voters in the jurisdictions.

Whitehouse voters rejected beer and wine sales 1,194 votes to 1,031 votes, or 54 percent to 46 percent, in 2010.
JP Precinct 1 lies mostly within the city of Tyler limits and is already wet. Small sections of Justice Precinct 1 jut just outside the city's northeastern, northwestern and southwestern limits.
