An update about progress on Tyler Junior College’s nursing and health sciences facility will be presented during a board workshop today.

The college has hired architectural and construction firms for the project but is still in the design phase.

Construction is scheduled to begin in May. In other business, the board is scheduled to vote on the hiring of L&L Asphalt Corp. to build a 72-space parking lot near the intersection of Magnolia Drive and East Lake Street.

TJC will pay the company about $313,000 for the work, which should be completed before the fall semester.

The college also is taking steps toward completing renovations on the Rogers Student Center Apache Rooms.

Built in 1987, the rooms are frequently used for meetings, scholarship dinners and student activities.

TJC spokesman Fred Peters said the rooms are in need of upgrades to audiovisual equipment, carpet and the dividers that allow the rooms to be separated.

“This is a long overdue project,” he said.

With board approval, Broadcast Works of Tyler will be the lead company on the project.

TJC will pay the company more than $418,000, barring additions or deductions to the work. The project is slated to begin Feb. 18 and end by March 31.

The board workshop is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. today in the Board Conference Room in the White Administrative Services Center on the TJC main campus.

The meeting is scheduled to follow at 11 a.m. today in the Board Room. Both are open to the public.
