UPDATE: Kaufman County officials say no arrest made in Kaufman slaying

Kaufman County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Patricia Laney told the Tyler Morning Telegraph there has been no arrest made in the shooting death of Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse.

An earlier report from the the Dallas Morning News website stated Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins says an arrest has been made in this morning's slaying in Kaufman.

Kaufman County Crime Stoppers is offering a 10,000 reward for information on the men involved in the killing of Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse.

Pat Laney, spokeswoman for the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office, said the agency is looking for a man and driver in an older Ford Taurus that is possibly brown or silver. She said the vehicle was last seen at the Kaufman County Courthouse Annex in the employee parking area.

The U.S. Justice Department stated, on their website, there were grateful for the work by Kaufman County District Attorney's Office and assistant district attorney Hasse in a Justice case against two members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang in the Southern District of Texas.

Two members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang (ABT) pleaded guilty today to racketeering charges related to their membership in the ABT's criminal enterprise.

There is an active manhunt for suspected assailants in the shooting death of a Kaufman County assistant district attorney killed earlier Thursday morning outside the Kaufman County county courthouse annex.

Authorities believe they have found the car used in the shooting death of Kaufman County assistant district attorney Mark Hasse at Van Zandt County line.

Witnesses to the killing say Hasse was beaten by the suspect be he was shot.

Early reports suggest the assailants used assault rifles.


UPDATED: THURSDAY, JAN. 31, 11 A.M.
KAUFMAN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) – An assistant district attorney with the Kaufman County District Attorney's Office has been shot and killed. The shooting happened around 8:50 a.m.

Officials with the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department have confirmed to CBS 11 News that the man was shot in the parking lot of the department of motor vehicles, which is across the street from the county courthouse.

The shooting victim was transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Kaufman. It has been confirmed that the man has died.

During a 10:30 a.m. press conference officials confirmed that the district attorney was walking to his office, from the parking lot, when he was assaulted by an unknown person and "shot multiple times." During the press conference one county leader spoke about the dangers that come with working in the justice system. "We always have to think about that in our jobs. Any one of us involved with dealing with a criminal element has to think about that."

The courthouse was not evacuated, but has been placed on lockdown.

Authorities believe there were two individuals involved in the shooting – both are still at large. State troopers have confirmed that an all points bulletin has been put out for two males, wearing all black clothing and tactical vests. The men are believed to be driving a silver-colored, late-model Ford Taurus with no license plates on the vehicle.

As a precaution administrators have put the entire Kaufman Independent School District on full lockdown "until further notice."

Kaufman County is just southeast of Dallas.

CBS 11 News has crews in the air and on the ground and will have more information as it becomes available.

A county employee in Kaufman County has been gunned down this morning as they made their way to work.

Kaufman County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Patricia Laney told the Tyler Morning Telegraph the shooting happened shortly before 9 a.m. in a parking lot near the county's courthouse annex.

“This did not happen in a county building, but instead in a parking lot,” she said.

Ms. Laney said the victim was shot by two unknown assailants and police in the area are searching for any information leading to their apprehension.

“The Kaufman police are working the crime scene and we are helping them out,” she said.

Ms. Laney did not know the status of the person shot, but said they had been transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

She would not say who the employee was or which department they worked in for the county.
