MIDDAY UPDATE: Kaufman County ADA shot, killed; manhunt on
SHOOTING, MANHUNT
There is an active search for two men who fatally shot a Kaufman County assistant district attorney earlier this morning outside the Kaufman County county courthouse annex. Authorities believe they have found the car used to get away from the shooting death of a Kaufman County assistant district attorney at the Van Zandt County line. Witnesses to the killing say the assistant district attorney was beaten by the suspects before he was shot. Early reports suggest the assailants used assault rifles. We're following this and will post updates as they become available.
BEER, WINE VOTE IN WHITEHOUSE
The option for beer and wine sales will go before Whitehouse voters this May, but not in Justice of the Peace Precinct 1. The city verified enough registered voter signatures in Whitehouse to place the proposition to legalize the sale of beer and wine for off-premise consumption on ballots, city secretary Stephanie Wright said. However, Smith County Election Administrator Karen Nelson said petitions for the same measure in Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 were not turned in by the Monday deadline.
TEEN ALCOHOL, DRUG ABUSE REPORT
The Robert E. Lee Parent Teacher Association will address teen alcohol and drug abuse during a presentation tonight at 7 p.m. at the high school's fine arts auditorium. Known as "Party 101: Consequences of Underage Drinking," this project helps teens, parents, and educators understand the negative effects of underage drinking. According to a statement from Tyler ISD, parents will receive a wake up call about what really goes on at these parties and how, even if their children are not drinking at the party, they are in real danger by being present at the party because of behavior of those who are drinking. Students, parents, and community members are encouraged to attend.
TIME-SHARE SCAM
An 83-year-old Smith County man has fallen victim to a time share scam, paying $6,000 to shady companies who offered him twice the amount he would have taken for his vacation spot in Mexico. Jack Durrett, of Emerald Bay, owns Climatic Care in Tyler and has had a time share in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for about 10 years.
