East Texas groups set conferences for produce and turfgrass

Two annual conferences are scheduled for February — the annual East Texas Turfgrass Conference and the annual East Texas Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Conference. The Turfgrass Conference will be held Feb. 7 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Research and Extension Center in Overton. The an- nual Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Conference will be held Feb. 26 at the Tyler Rose Garden Center.

Two annual conferences are scheduled for February — the annual East Texas Turfgrass Conference and the annual East Texas Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Conference. The Turfgrass Conference will be held Feb. 7 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Research and Extension Center in Overton. The an- nual Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Conference will be held Feb. 26 at the Tyler Rose Garden Center.
The Turfgrass Conference, which kicks off with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes around 3 p.m., will provide a wealth of information on turfgrass management. A registration fee of $30 per participant will be charged, which includes lunch payable at the door. Attendees with Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide licenses will receive five hours of continuing education credits (one hour Integrated Pest Management, one hour Laws and Regulations, and three hours General) for attending. Attendees with a Structural Pesticide Applicator license will receive four hours of continuing education credits (one Lawn and Ornamental, one Weed, one General and one IPM).
The Turfgrass Conference is open to those that manage turfgrass at school districts, city parks and recreation, lawn and landscape managers and homeowners alike. Topics include soil testing, new efficient irrigation practices, weed control and herbicide updates, IPM and its role in local school districts, choosing turfgrass for use in East Texas and laws and regulations for applicators.
The East Texas Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Conference, which kicks off with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes around 3:30 p.m., will provide a wealth of information on commercial fruit and vegetable production for the price of $30 per person (includes lunch) payable at the door. Attendees with Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide licenses will receive two hours of continuing education credits (two hours General).
The morning general session features presentations on the topics of Ag exemption 101, high tunnel houses for strawberries and vegetables, managing weeds and the orchard floor, water requirements for fruits and vegetables and sustainable versus organic production.
Following lunch, afternoon sessions will be held. The afternoon session includes developing a sustainable vegetable garden plan, managing Texas’ most common fruit problems, honey for home and profit and the do’s and don’ts of a raised bed garden.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit commercial vendors during the course of the day. Sponsors for the annual East Texas Commercial Fruit and Vegetable Conference include Irrigation-Mart, Inc. and Heritage Land Bank. The Rose Garden Center is at 420 Rose Park Drive.
