Representatives from the Humane Society of East Texas formally announced the new name for the organization: Pets Fur People.

“Our mission now is bringing joy to people by bringing people and pets together,” executive director Gayle Helms said at Friday’s news conference. “It’s not just about the animals, it’s about people.”

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the organization’s service to the area, but those services have changed more recently.

As of January 2010, the facility became a selective-admission, no-kill animal sanctuary.

According to the written release, the Humane Society of East Texas was the impoundment facility for all animals seized by Animal Control officers in Tyler, Smith County and six other municipalities. About 80 percent of the 376,000 were euthanized.

“The board felt like we didn’t want to be responsible for euthanizing thousands of animals,” Ms. Helms said.

The facility now also provides spay, neuter and other veterinary services at a reduced cost for the public. The facilities also were renovated to make for a more comfortable stay for the animals to wait to be adopted.

“I appreciate what Pets Fur People is doing and look forward to the vision you have for the future,” City Councilman Darryl Bowdre said.
