Tyler ISD board to talk tests, schedules in meeting
High school schedules and standardized testing requirements are among the issues scheduled for discussion or vote during the Tyler ISD board meeting today.
The district is planning to change John Tyler and Robert E. Lee high schools to an eight-period day.
Both schools use a modified block schedule now.
TISD surveyed teachers at both campuses last spring to determine which schedule would most benefit academic performance, according to district information.
Teachers and committees at each campus agreed that the change would benefit students, according to the district.
The decision does not require a vote, but a district administrator will inform the board about it.

Another decision affecting students is the deferment of a requirement to count performance on high school end-of-course exams as 15 percent of a student's grade in the respective course.
Under the state's new standardized testing system, high school students have to take 15 end-of-course exams and each of these is supposed to count toward 15 percent of a student's course grade.
However, last year, the Texas commissioner of education gave school districts the option of deferring the requirement and did so again this year.
The board is scheduled to vote on a resolution that would defer implementation of the rule.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. today in the Dr. Jack L. Davidson Conference Center in the Jim Plyler Instructional Complex, 807 W. Glenwood Blvd.
The board will meet in executive session at 6 p.m. and a reception for new superintendent Gary Mooring will be at 5 p.m.
