The man killed in a police-involved shooting in Alto allegedly attempted to rob a gas station before the shooting incident, an official with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Capt. John Raffield, with the sheriff’s office, said that about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday an incident happened at the Pick N Go, 100 S. Marcus St.

“It was an attempted robbery or a robbery for a pack of cigarettes, but I don’t know if he left with the cigarettes or empty handed,” Raffield said.

Following the robbery, the man charged at the officer, he said officers told him at the scene. The officer shot the man on U.S. Highway 69, which is Marcus Street in town, about three blocks south of the Texas Highway 21 intersection, he said. That is near where the Pick N Go is located.

The Texas Rangers will investigate the shooting.

“They handle the investigation, so there are no outcries of impropriety or favoritism,” he said.

Raffield said tensions between officers and a concerned public ran high for about two hours at the scene.

Attempts to reach the Alto police chief for comment were unsuccessful Wednesday night.
