Cassity Jones, lumber company founder, dies at 94

The founder of an East Texas-based lumber company died Monday afternoon at the age of 94.

Cassity John Jones, the founder of Cassity Jones Inc., which grew to include Cassity Jones Lumber, Home Plus Floors, A-1 Rental, Winn Tile Co. and CJ Commercial, died in his Longview home.

The Panola County native graduated from Car­thage High School and attended Texas A&M University, where his entrepreneurial success started when he milked cows to earn room and board.

After college, Jones served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

After teaching at Panola College as a member of the charter faculty, he began building homes because of a post-war demand.

He opened the first Cassity Jones lumber yard in Carthage to facilitate his growing construction business. Numerous business ventures in the city led to his success throughout East Texas.

Cassity Jones Lumber and Building Material stores are in Longview, Carthage, Tyler, Henderson, Marshall, Nacogdoches, Terrell and in the Dallas area.

He was a member of the East Texas Home Builders Association, the Texas Lumbermen's Association, and he was honored in 2000 as the “Lumberman of the Year” for the state of Texas.

Jones and his wife Claudette were married for 40 years and lived in Longview for 36 years.

Memorials may be made in his memory to the Ashbury House or to the American Cancer Society. Funeral services are pending with Radar Funeral Home in Kilgore.
