GILMER — A 26-year-old Longview man was listed in critical condition in a Tyler hospital Monday after he and a woman were injured in a one-car accident on U.S. Highway 271 north of Gilmer.

Everett Jamon Fears was in the intensive care unit at East Texas Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. Fears was airlifted from East Texas Medical Center – Gilmer, departing about 10:50 p.m. Sunday.

Fears, who suffered blunt force trauma to the head, was a passenger in a northbound 2005 Kia Sorento when it overturned at least once Sunday when the driver, 25-year-old Angela Caroline Campbell, of Winnsboro, slammed on the brakes, according to investigating Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Brandon Love.

Ms. Campbell was taken to ETMC-Gilmer with nonlife-threatening injuries, and it was unclear Sunday whether she would be hospitalized, Love said. She was wearing a seat belt, but Fears was not. Fears was not ejected from the car, Love said.

The trooper also said he was not “at liberty” to say why Ms. Campbell hit the brakes because the investigation into the crash was ongoing.

Love said the driver of a southbound 18-wheeler truck told him he saw the car tumbling, and he “hit the ditch” to avoid a collision. However, the rig was not wrecked, Love said.

Love said he was alerted to the crash 1.8 miles north of Gilmer in Upshur County at 9:20 p.m. The vehicle, which came to rest right side up and facing south, sustained a bent top and shattered windshield.

Ms. Campbell, who is Fears’ girlfriend, had just clocked out only about 10 minutes earlier from her job as a nurse’s aide at Upshur Manor, a Gilmer nursing home, Love said.
